Borax / Sodium Borate
What It Is
Borax — sodium tetraborate decahydrate, Na2B4O7·10H2O (CAS 1303-96-4) — is a naturally occurring boron-containing mineral salt mined primarily from evaporite deposits in California, Turkey, and Argentina. The closely related compounds boric acid (H3BO3, CAS 10043-35-3) and sodium perborate (NaBO3) share borax's chemistry and regulatory classification. Borax functions as a laundry booster, water softener, pH buffer, and mild antimicrobial.
Common Uses
Borax appears in laundry boosters (20 Mule Team Borax), some powdered detergents, multi-purpose cleaning powders, ant and insect baits, and a wide range of DIY cleaning recipes circulated in homemaking blogs and social media. It is often recommended as a "natural" alternative to synthetic cleaning chemicals. In cosmetic and personal care products, borax functions as an emulsifier and preservative booster, though its use has declined sharply since EU restrictions in 2010.
How It Works
Borax raises the pH of cleaning solutions to mildly alkaline (around pH 9–10), which helps emulsify grease and dissolve some organic soils. As a water softener it binds with calcium and magnesium ions that would otherwise interfere with surfactant performance. Its mild antimicrobial activity comes from boron's interference with fungal and bacterial cell metabolism — the same mechanism that makes boric acid effective as an insecticide for cockroaches and ants.
Safety and Regulation
The European Chemicals Agency classified borax (sodium tetraborate) and boric acid as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) in 2010 under the REACH regulation, citing reproductive toxicity (Category 1B). Both compounds are restricted in cosmetic products in the EU and carry mandatory hazard labeling. The U.S. EPA evaluates boron under drinking water reference standards and has not classified borax as a hazardous household product, but the CDC ToxFAQs profile for boron notes that high oral doses cause developmental and reproductive effects in laboratory animals. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sets workplace exposure limits for borate dust.
Why Natural Flower Power Does Not Use It
Natural Flower Power does not use borax, boric acid, or sodium perborate in any product.
The "natural" framing around borax obscures real regulatory concern. We made the formulation choice to exclude borates after reviewing the EU REACH classification and the CDC reproductive toxicity data — for an ingredient with documented developmental effects, the cost-benefit math does not favor inclusion when plant-derived alternatives exist. We use citric acid for pH adjustment and sodium gluconate for water softening, both of which deliver equivalent functional performance without the reproductive hazard classification.
Related Ingredients
Citric acid and sodium gluconate are plant-derived alternatives Natural Flower Power uses for the pH-buffering and water-softening functions that borax provides. Sodium hypochlorite is another commonly used cleaning agent with separate regulatory considerations. Phosphates are an older water-softening builder largely phased out for environmental reasons.
