Benzyl Butyl Phthalate
What It Is
Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) is a phthalate ester with the chemical formula C19H20O4 (CAS 85-68-7). It is a clear, oily liquid used primarily as a plasticizer in vinyl flooring, artificial leather, automotive interiors, and some adhesives and sealants. BBP is not a typical ingredient in cleaning or personal care products but is relevant to the broader phthalate discussion. It functions as a plasticizer that makes PVC and other polymers flexible.
Common Uses
BBP is used primarily in vinyl floor tiles, sheet vinyl, artificial leather, traffic cones, food conveyor belts, and some adhesive formulations. It is less commonly used than DEHP and represents a smaller share of global phthalate production. Human exposure to BBP occurs primarily through diet (from food contact materials), dust ingestion (from vinyl flooring), and dermal contact with BBP-containing products. BBP is not used in personal care products or household cleaning formulations.
How It Works
BBP functions as a plasticizer by the same mechanism as other phthalates -- it positions itself between polymer chains to increase flexibility. The benzyl group gives BBP faster fusion characteristics with PVC compared to DEHP, which is why it is preferred in some vinyl flooring applications where processing speed matters. Like other phthalates, BBP is not chemically bonded to the polymer and can migrate out over time.
Safety and Regulation
BBP is classified as a substance of very high concern under EU REACH due to reproductive toxicity (Category 1B). The CPSIA permanently bans BBP in children's toys and child care articles above 0.1%. The EU Cosmetics Regulation bans BBP in cosmetic products.
Animal studies have demonstrated anti-androgenic effects from BBP exposure, including reduced fetal testosterone production and reproductive tract malformations, though the potency is generally lower than DBP or DEHP (NTP-CERHR, 2003). IARC has not classified BBP as a carcinogen, but the NTP identifies it as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence in animal studies.
Why Natural Flower Power Does Not Use It
Natural Flower Power does not use benzyl butyl phthalate or any phthalate in any product.
BBP has no role in cleaning product formulations -- it is an industrial plasticizer. Our phthalate-free formulation standard excludes the entire phthalate class, and our packaging materials (PET, HDPE) do not contain phthalate plasticizers. For our customers, the phthalate-free commitment means no intentional phthalate exposure from any Natural Flower Power product, whether from the formula itself, from fragrance blends, or from packaging materials.
Related Ingredients
DEHP is the most widely used phthalate plasticizer. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has stronger anti-androgenic activity. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is the phthalate most commonly found in personal care products.
