What It Is

Hydrogen peroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H2O2 (CAS 7722-84-1). It is a pale blue liquid (colorless in dilute solution) that acts as a strong oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen, which is often cited as an environmental advantage over chlorine-based alternatives. In household products, it is used at concentrations of 3%-10% for cleaning, bleaching, and disinfection.

Common Uses

Hydrogen peroxide is used in oxygen bleach products, color-safe laundry bleaches, bathroom cleaners, mold removers, wound antiseptics, toothpastes, hair bleaching products, and food-grade sanitizers. It is also used industrially in paper bleaching and wastewater treatment. Stabilized hydrogen peroxide formulations (such as sodium percarbonate, which releases hydrogen peroxide when dissolved) are found in many "oxy" cleaning products. It is registered with the EPA as an antimicrobial active ingredient.

How It Works

Hydrogen peroxide works by generating reactive oxygen species -- primarily hydroxyl radicals (-OH) -- that oxidize organic molecules on contact. As a bleaching agent, it breaks the chromophore bonds responsible for stain color. As a disinfectant, it oxidizes microbial cell components including lipids, proteins, and DNA. The antimicrobial mechanism is broad-spectrum, effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores.

Hydrogen peroxide decomposes naturally into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). This decomposition is accelerated by light, heat, and catalytic metals like iron and manganese. The fact that it breaks down into benign products is a genuine environmental advantage over chlorine-based oxidizers, which can form persistent chlorinated organic compounds.

Safety and Regulation

Hydrogen peroxide at household concentrations (3%) is a mild skin and eye irritant. Higher concentrations (10%+) can cause chemical burns and are classified as corrosive. Ingestion of concentrated hydrogen peroxide can cause severe internal burns, gas embolism, and has resulted in fatalities (Moon et al., 2006). Inhalation of hydrogen peroxide vapor or mist can irritate respiratory tissues.

The FDA classifies hydrogen peroxide as GRAS for food use at specific concentrations and applications. As a first aid antiseptic, hydrogen peroxide 3% is an FDA-approved OTC drug. The American Dental Association recognizes hydrogen peroxide as an active ingredient in some tooth-whitening products.

Hydrogen peroxide is not classified as a carcinogen. It does not persist in the environment and does not bioaccumulate.

Why Natural Flower Power Does Not Use It

Natural Flower Power does not use hydrogen peroxide in any product.

Hydrogen peroxide is a legitimate, environmentally favorable oxidizing agent -- it breaks down into water and oxygen, which is about as clean as a reactive chemical gets. Our reason for not using it is product category, not safety objection. Our products are surfactant-based cleaners: all-purpose cleaners, hand soaps, dish soaps, and air fresheners. None of these product types require an oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide belongs in bleaching products, stain removers, and disinfectants -- product categories we do not currently produce. If we ever expand into those categories, hydrogen peroxide would be on the short list of ingredients we would consider.

Related Ingredients

Sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) is another oxidizing agent used in household cleaning, with more environmental concerns than hydrogen peroxide. Citric acid provides mild descaling and cleaning action in NFP products but is not an oxidizer or disinfectant.
