Toluene
What It Is
Toluene (also called methylbenzene) is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent with the chemical formula C7H8 (CAS 108-88-3). It is a colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent, benzene-like odor. Toluene is derived from petroleum refining and coal tar processing. It is one of the most widely produced industrial chemicals globally, functioning primarily as a solvent in paints, coatings, adhesives, and some cosmetic products. Toluene is not typically used in household cleaning products.
Common Uses
Toluene is used in nail polishes (as a solvent for film-forming polymers), paint thinners, adhesives, rubber cement, automotive fuels, and industrial coatings. In consumer products, its most visible use is in conventional nail polish, where it helps dissolve the nitrocellulose and other resins that form the hard film. Many nail polish brands have reformulated to remove toluene (part of the "3-free," "5-free," or "10-free" movement in nail care). Toluene is not used in household cleaning products, liquid soaps, or air fresheners.
How It Works
Toluene is an effective solvent because its aromatic ring structure readily dissolves nonpolar and moderately polar organic compounds, including resins, waxes, oils, and polymers. In nail polish, toluene keeps the formula liquid and workable; it evaporates after application, leaving behind the hardened polymer film. Its high vapor pressure means it evaporates quickly, which is useful for fast-drying products but also contributes to inhalation exposure.
Safety and Regulation
Toluene is a well-documented neurotoxin. Acute inhalation exposure causes dizziness, headaches, confusion, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness. Chronic occupational exposure (primarily in industrial settings) can cause permanent neurological damage, including cognitive impairment, hearing loss, and vision disturbances (ATSDR, 2000). Intentional inhalation of toluene-containing products ("huffing") is a recognized form of substance abuse with potentially fatal consequences.
Toluene is classified as a reproductive toxicant by the NTP. Animal studies and human occupational data link chronic high-level exposure to developmental toxicity, including fetal growth restriction. OSHA sets a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 200 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average for workplace air.
The EU Cosmetics Regulation restricts toluene in nail products to a maximum of 25% (Annex III). California lists toluene under Proposition 65 as a reproductive toxicant. IARC classifies toluene as Group 3 (not classifiable as to carcinogenicity).
Why Natural Flower Power Does Not Use It
Natural Flower Power does not use toluene or any petroleum-derived solvents in any product.
Toluene has no role in cleaning products, soaps, or air fresheners. It is primarily a nail polish and industrial solvent. Our product categories -- all-purpose cleaners, hand soaps, dish soaps, and air fresheners -- have no formulation need for aromatic solvents. Our exclusion of all petroleum-derived solvents means toluene would be excluded even if it had a theoretical application in our product types.
Related Ingredients
2-Butoxyethanol is another petroleum-derived solvent commonly found in household cleaners, with less severe but documented health concerns. SD Alcohol 40B is the grain-derived solvent used in NFP air fresheners -- it serves a comparable solvent function without the toxicity profile of petroleum-derived alternatives.
