Petroleum-Based Solvents
What It Is
Petroleum-based solvents are liquids refined or synthesized from crude oil that dissolve substances other liquids cannot. As a group they include glycol ethers such as 2-butoxyethanol, aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, chlorinated solvents such as chloroform, and refined oil fractions such as mineral oil. What links them is origin and function rather than a single molecular structure: each is derived from petroleum feedstock and each is valued for dissolving oils, greases, resins, or other ingredients that do not mix with water. Common Uses
Petroleum solvents earn their place in cleaning through grease-cutting and formulation chemistry. 2-Butoxyethanol is a common glycol-ether solvent in all-purpose sprays, glass cleaners, and degreasers, prized for cutting oily films. Toluene appears in some paints, adhesives, and specialty cleaning and thinning products. Chloroform is not intentionally added to consumer cleaners today but can form as a byproduct when chlorine bleach meets organic matter. Mineral oil and petrolatum are used as lubricants, polishing agents, and barrier ingredients in furniture polishes, leather care, and some personal care products.
How It Works
Solvency comes down to molecular compatibility: "like dissolves like." Grease and oily soils are nonpolar, so nonpolar or amphiphilic petroleum solvents dissolve them where water alone fails. Glycol ethers such as 2-butoxyethanol carry both a water-friendly and an oil-friendly end, letting them bridge oily soil into a water-based cleaning solution. Aromatic solvents such as toluene dissolve resins and heavy organic films outright. Mineral oil works by a different mechanism — rather than removing soil, it coats and lubricates surfaces to leave a protective, light-reflecting film. Many of these solvents are volatile, meaning they evaporate into the air during and after use.
Safety and Regulation
Each solvent carries its own regulatory record. The U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry maintains toxicological profiles for 2-butoxyethanol and for toluene (ATSDR), and OSHA sets workplace permissible exposure limits for these solvents under its air contaminants standard (29 CFR 1910.1000). Toluene is listed under California Proposition 65 as a developmental toxicant (OEHHA). Chloroform is classified by IARC as Group 2B, "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (IARC Monographs, vol. 73, 1999), and is regulated by the U.S. EPA as a drinking-water disinfection byproduct. For mineral oil, IARC distinguishes grades: untreated or mildly treated mineral oils are classified Group 1, while highly refined cosmetic- and food-grade mineral oils are treated separately (IARC Monographs, vol. 100F, 2012). Why Natural Flower Power Does Not Use It
Natural Flower Power does not use petroleum-based solvents in any product. Our cleaners contain no 2-butoxyethanol, no toluene, no chlorine chemistry that could form chloroform, and no mineral oil.
We cut grease with plant-derived surfactants such as decyl glucoside and coco-glucoside, which emulsify oily soil into water without a petroleum carrier solvent. Because our formulas are water-based concentrates that customers activate by adding water, we do not rely on volatile solvents to thin or deliver the product. Choosing plant-derived solvency keeps petroleum solvents and their associated air-quality and regulatory questions out of our formulations.
